Carbon Financing

 

Our environment friendly manufacturing facility BAM Apparel at Kithulgala which is operated

 
  • with minimum artificial lighting
 
  • which uses natural ventilation and natural water supply from earth born springs (for general purposes and drinking after purification) and
 

 

 
 
  • Construction of five water holes / ponds in the Yala Sanctuary to retain and or fill water for the animals during the dry season. Three more under construction.
 
  • Total cost of project – Rs.800,000/=
 
  • The above projects has been done under the knowledge and approval of the Ministry of Environment Mr. Champika Ranawaka.
 
 
    Commemorating the “world environment day” every year in the month of June by educating school children and the children of our employees all around the country, the importance of environment conservation and reforestation.
 
    Donating valuable plants to the country for growing and nurturing as our contribution to the nation’s reforestation program.
 
    Planting trees in our business compounds to achieve further green balance.
 
    This year about 200 plants were given away to the villagers for replanting on World Environment Day.
REDUCING POLLUTION
 
    Our manufacturing processes don’t have air emissions, combustion related or otherwise, except for Diesel generators and boilers which are regularly maintained for optimum efficiencies. No chemicals or harmful liquids are used.
 
    The water used in the garment washing plant, flexible packing plant is treated and disposed while flexible packing plant has the loop type water recycle system. 
  Installing water recycling plants in our factories which generate polluted water through washing, dyeing and cleaning processes. Other factories retain the waste water within the compound through earth pits-absorption.
 
    The yarn dyeing facility at Thulhiriya MAS Fabric Park purifies and recycles water through connection to the central water treatment plant of the complex.
 
    Other solid waste such as fabric / cotton waste and, paper are recycled (paper) and donated for reuse (cotton waste) in self employment projects and also for export to Korea for recycling.
 
    Being manufactures for leading UK brands NEXT and M&S we have to be compliant with their vendor compliance requirements. These requirements are as follows.
 
  • NEXT (UK) – The code of practice (cop), standards based on ETI incorporating environment protection, industrial production standards, human safety, chemical safety and other production and social compliances. 
  The Marks &Spencer ‘Plan A’ and ETI are the standards to follow by all licensed manufacturers of M&S where the ETI is compulsory and Plan A is voluntary.
  Based on “Plan A” we have developed our own policies voluntarily to adhere to the highlighted areas.
  100% smoke free environment at work places.
  Common transport for Senior Managers (group travel) to outstation factories, thereby reducing the Carbon Monoxide emission.
  Consumables
 

Optimizing resources such as by

 
    • Food- by educating workers on the importance of serving what you can eat and not throwing away food
 
    • Water – by installing pressure taps to control water wastage.
 
    • Energy (electricity) – by using natural sunlight, natural ventilation, evaporating cooling systems instead of Air conditioning.
   
 

Energy saving Measures

 
    Introducing sun light to the production floor and minimizing the use of artificial lighting through Suntec system.
 
    Preserving energy by adopting evaporating air cooling systems instead of Air conditioning for comfort of staff.
  Introducing needle point lighting instead of heavy factory lights on floor.   
 

Benefits

 
  • Reduced amounts on electricity bills:-Rs. 140,000/= per month (14,000 Kw) in four plants which has sun light operations by switching off 1500 of 40W normal tube lights.
 
  • 63.5% reduction of electricity cost of Thermoplastics by using totally day light for day time production and ‘high bay lighting’ for night time and also by task point lighting. Workings as follows.
 

Renewable Energy Use

 
    1. We have set up a department for renewable energy under a project dedicated Engineer Mr. Asanka Tennakoon.
 
    1. Our new hotel projects in the East (approved by the government) is envisaged to totally use renewable / solar energy for lighting purposes.
 

Specific eco-friendly Projects

 
  • Constructing 05 water holes for animals at Yala Sanctuary Park.
 
  • Organic farming in Nuwaraeliya which is a pilot project. BAM Holdings Holiday Complex, Upper Lake Road, Nuwaraeliya
 
  • Handing over about 200 plants to employees and villagers.
 

Community Relations

 
  • Trained entire staff at the Homagama hospital on how to greet, treat people and set them a vision to be the best hospital in Asia by 2015.
 
  • Seminar advocating the need to invest in the East. Brought in business and industry leaders for a joint business forum to encourage business in the North and East as a means of developing this part of the country uplifting the community, quality of life of people and bridging the wealth divide.
 
  • Communicating with employees who represent the community through regular meetings with the societal representatives such as Grama-sewaka, religious leaders, parents of workers etc.
 

Philanthropic initiatives & Child/ Elder care programs

 
  • Donation of a neo natal infant ventilator to the children’s ICU of the Homagama base hospital – satisfying a long felt need of the hospital – to reduce the infant mortality.

Infrastructure development at village/other level

 

      Construction and donation of a new out patients department, clinics and diagnostics center, for the Homagama base hospital at a cost of Rs.100 million, This is the stage one of a 3 phased multi million rupee development program undertaken by BAM Holdings PVT Ltd - Bamunu Arachchi Foundation, for the benefit of the community and the country at large. The new complex built is donated to the people of Sri Lanka through His Excellency The president of Sri Lanka

 

Employee voluntarism

 

The donation of five thousand packs of essential clothing Valued over Rs. 500,000/- to internally displaced children, women and men in the north, the victims of war housed at the Manik farm IDP camp in Chettikulam Vavunia in May 2009 totally donated by the staff and workers of the group.

 
 

The collection of one day’s salary (Rs. 500,000/=) from a majority of the management, staff and workers to be donated to the President’s “Api wenuwen Api” fund to built houses to the nations heroic soldiers.
