BAM group of companies consume approximately 13 MWhr of Electrical Energy per day and by the end of year 2010, this amount is predicted to increase by another 25% up to 17MWhr. We also consume estimated 2000 liters of fossil fuels daily in our boilers & fleet of vehicles. We estimate that our total direct carbon emission is to be around 20 tons per day barring the emission those are indirectly involved with other utility services and consumed products. This make our annual carbon foot print to 6,000 tons and it is predicted this amount to go up to 7500 tons by the end of the year 2010.
Global warming poses one of the most serious threats to global environment ever faced in human history. Carbon emission has directly resulted in global warming. By the end of this century, it is predicted that the temperature could rise in many areas by 1.1C to 6 C. This could end up most of the earth in deserts. Many adverse effects those are associated with global warming will surface including unexpected climate changes, rise of sea level, food crisis, water crisis and unexpected epidemics.
On the other hand, Sri Lanka’s over dependency over fossil fuels has drained our foreign reserves which could have utilized in educating our kids, taking care of our sick, providing meals & shelters for poor’s or investing on development projects for the future. World has been dependent heavily on fossil fuels for last century and “Peak Oil” at when demand for oil is always higher than the supply, is expected to happen around 2020. By then, the fuel prices could rise rapidly that no developing country can hardly afford them with out adverse implication on the economy.
We, BAM group are keen on offsetting our carbon foot print by adopting renewable Energy sources including wind, solar, bio mass & hydro. We have already initiated a pilot project of solar photovoltaic grid tied system at the residence of our chairman. This system of 4 kW would offset half of the carbon foot print of our chairman’s electrical energy consumption. Upon success on the pilot project, we will be continuing on offsetting carbon foot print of our factories using renewable energy forms of wind, solar, biomass and hydro.
We will also assist other industries to offset their carbon foot print by providing goods, services and experiences that we gained on renewable energy. We will also hope to strengthen the renewable energy industry in Sri Lanka by joining hands with local industries. We believe this endeavor would enable us to serve our country by aiding to save foreign exchange so that our most valuable funds could go elsewhere needed.
